What Is Today?

“This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it (). While this passage is not referring specifically to the Lord’s Day, it certainly includes it. For instance, this is the day the Lord made for Christians. It is His day, the day He sanctified for a special use. We truly are blessed to have the Lord’s Day. What is today?

It is a day to be together. Few blessings rival the ones having to do with our being together. It’s just a joy to see one another, to edify one another, to be part of one another. The Scriptures teach that we are a family, a household (). It is only natural that the good king be with his subjects, as Christ is with us today. Is it not good just to be together, to join one another in doing what we do on this Lord’s Day?

It is a day of meditation, prayer, praise. The joy of worship is never more significant than when the saints come together on the Lord’s Day. On this day we take time to meditate (). And the fact that we do it all together greatly enhances our enjoyment of it.

It is a day to remember. God dedicated a special day for us to remember the Lord Jesus Christ until He comes again. It is a day to recall His incarnation, His perfect life, His resurrection from the dead. It is a day to reflect on the miracles He did (). It gives us special privileges no one else has; it is reserved for His people on His day. And what a joy that we eat the bread to remember his body and drink the fruit of the vine to remember His shed blood together!

It is a day for rejuvenation. The Lord’s Day is much like an oasis in the midst of a parched desert. It gives us a respite from the fiercely fast activities of the week, a rest from the pressures of the secular world, a time to refresh our spirits and invigorate our spiritual beings. We sing songs and that stimulates us to greater service. Our prayers together cause us to reflect on the true meaning of life and rededicate ourselves to the things that really matter. Our participation in the Lord’s Supper makes us aware that Heaven is the important point of focus, not these earthly things. And our listening to the word of God discussed serves to expose our needs, to give us motive to make a stronger fight against our secularized society, to make sure we are headed in the right direction. And what a joy that all that is done together, with all of us being a part.

It is a time to draw sustenance from one another. We “rejoice with those that rejoice” and we “weep with those that weep” on the Lord’s Day (). We learn from one another. We pray with and for one another. We recommend the higher life to one another. We warn of the common foe, and rejoice in our common salvation.

Yes, the Lord’s Day is a one another day. Is it not good to be together today? Even those of us who are gone today will be with you in spirit, because we belong together.
