Children of the Lord

The chief priests and the scribes couldn’t believe their ears. After Jesus cleansed the temple and began healing the lame and the blind, the children cried out, “Hosanna to the Son of David.” Children! Even back then, they were supposed to be seen and not heard. The rulers asked Jesus if He could hear what they were saying about Him. Instead of rebuking the little ones, He rebuked their leaders by quoting from Psalm 8:2. “Have you never read, ‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babes Thou hast prepared praise for Thyself’” (Matt. 21:12-16).

God is so good that He is not limited to worship from intellectuals and mature persons. Even someone as humble and innocent as a little child can fitly speak words of praise and offer sweet adoration. We would all do well to listen and learn from them.

Lowell and Marcia Koenig recently handed me some “proverbs” written by students in their fifth and sixth grade Bible class. I want all of our members to be amazed by what our children are saying. Not only are these words from the mouths of babes, they are obviously thoughts straight from their hearts.

“Shut your mouth unless you have something nice to say” (Austin Sisco).

“Liars are like onions, they stink of evil. And then can make other people cry” (Ryan Summers).

“Just because a bully is bullying you, you don’t need to bully back” (Jordan Finck).

“If you speak too proudly of yourself, get ready to be disciplined” (Kassandra Palma).

“You might impress your friends with what you say, but God is not impressed” (Megan Finck).

“The time will come when you will have to decide what is right and what is easy” (Austin Sisco).

“A tongue is like a whip, it hurts other people” (Ryan Summers).

“Some people might be blessed with money, but the true blessing is eternal life in heaven” (Megan Finck).

“Make plans by seeking advice” (Kassandra Palma).

“If you don’t have something good to say then don’t say anything at all” (Jordan Finck).

“Evil has two faces, cute and wicked” (Ryan Summers).

“Give to others like you would like to be treated” (Kassandra Palma).

“Control your anger!!” (Austin Sisco).

“If you choose the wrong friends then you will be with the wrong crowd” (Megan Finck).

“Being kind isn’t all there is in following God. You have to really believe in Him and have faith and follow the Bible” (Jordan Finck).

“Evil is like candy, sweet but bad for you” (Ryan Summers).

“You can choose what your friends do, but if your friends don’t believe in God you shouldn’t do what they do” (Megan Finck).

“Walk in the way of understanding” (Kassandra Palma).

“It is good to have friends who will help you go to heaven” (Austin Sisco).

“Don’t be garlic, bitter and not good raw; you should be a grape, juicy and sweet!” (Jordan Finck).

Can you think of a better way to say any of those? What a testimony to their godly parents who are raising them in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. What a credit to the instruction they are receiving in their Bible classes. What a glorification of God, Who has prepared for Himself praise out of the mouths of babes and wisdom out of the minds of the simple.
